Your car, truck, or SUVs drivetrain is a cylinder made of steel or aluminum and it connects to the universal joint (U-Joint) at the back of your transmission. It basically sends power through the transmission to turn the wheels. The drivetrain can be located at the front or the back of the vehicle. Four-wheel drive can be turned on and off, and is usually used for off-road purposes when extra traction is needed for covering terrain.
